Free Travel Pass Ireland: Who Qualifies & What It Covers
Last updated: 6 July 2026
Quick answer: The Free Travel Scheme — often called the senior travel pass, pensioner's pass or OAP travel pass — gives everyone aged 66+ living in Ireland, and some younger people on qualifying payments, free travel on trains, buses, Luas and DART nationwide. It is run by the Department of Social Protection and shown as "FT" on your Public Services Card. Train seats can be reserved online for free; the quickest way is the free Passenger.ie app.
Who qualifies for the Free Travel Pass?
- Everyone aged 66 or over who is legally and permanently resident in Ireland.
- People under 66 receiving certain payments, including Disability Allowance, Blind Pension, Invalidity Pension or Carer's Allowance.
- Specific groups such as certain visually impaired people and some widows/widowers of pass holders.
Full eligibility rules are published by the Department of Social Protection on gov.ie and explained on citizensinformation.ie.
What transport is covered?
- Trains — all intercity, commuter and DART services nationwide
- Bus Éireann — including Expressway on most routes
- Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland
- Luas (Dublin tram)
- Local Link rural transport and many participating private bus and ferry operators
- Cross-border services to Northern Ireland under the All-Ireland Free Travel Scheme
Pass types: FT-P, FT+S and FT+C
Your Public Services Card shows your free travel class in the top left corner:
- FT-P — you can travel free on your own.
- FT+S — your spouse, partner or cohabitant can travel free with you.
- FT+C — a companion (aged 16+) can travel free with you, because you're unable to travel alone.
Using your pass on trains: book your seat
Free travel does not mean a guaranteed seat. Intercity trains (Dublin–Cork, Dublin–Galway, Dublin–Westport and similar routes) are often fully reserved at weekends and holidays, and each train has a limited number of €0.00 Free Travel Pass reservations.
You can reserve online in two ways:
- The free Passenger.ie app (iPhone & Android) — type your journey in one sentence; it finds the trains with free reservations left and emails your ticket in about a minute.
- The train operator's journey planner — select "Free Travel Pass or Valid Ticket Holder" as the passenger type. See our step-by-step booking guide.
Always carry your physical pass when travelling — inspectors can ask to see it alongside your reservation.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Free Travel Pass work?
You show your Public Services Card marked FT when boarding or when an inspector asks, and you travel free on participating trains, buses, Luas and DART. On intercity trains you should also reserve a seat in advance — seat reservations are free for pass holders and can be booked online.
How do I apply for the Free Travel Pass?
If you're 66+ and getting a State Pension, free travel is usually added to your Public Services Card automatically. Otherwise, apply to the Department of Social Protection with form FT1 (available on gov.ie or at your Intreo centre).
Can I travel to Northern Ireland with my pass?
Yes. The All-Ireland Free Travel Scheme covers cross-border services, and you can apply for a Senior SmartPass to travel free within Northern Ireland.
Is there a peak-time restriction?
On most services there are no time restrictions for Free Travel Pass holders. A small number of urban bus services have historically had restrictions — check with the operator if unsure.
Do I ever pay anything on the train?
The journey itself is free. Online seat reservations for pass holders are free while €0.00 reservations remain on that train; after that, remaining reservations may carry a small fee. Passenger.ie only shows trains where free reservations are still available.
